National Stop the Clocks Day/National Fun Facts About Names Day

Ah yes, the “National Holidays” all students wish they had the ability to make happen…National Stop the Clocks Day! Seriously, with numerous essays and reports due throughout the remaining few weeks of school (I have, I believe I counted, 9 in the next three weeks), wouldn’t it be wonderful to have the ability to make time stop long enough to get everything done AND have a social life?!? While I’m sure there is actual significance unrelated to the hardships of a student, the only information my research turned up was on the band Oasis.

So…moving on, today also marks National Fun Facts About Names Day! Let’s take a few moments to learn some fun facts about names!

·      The Pillsbury Doughboy’s actual name is Poppin’ Fresh.
·      The World’s Longest Name belongs to a gentleman named, Adolph Blaine Charles David Earl Frederick Gerald Hubert Irvin John Kenneth Lloyd Martin Nero Oliver Paul Quincy Randolph Sherman Thomas Uncas Victor William Xerxes Yancy Zeus Wolfeschlegelsteinhausenberdorft Sr., or Mr. Wolf Plus 585 Sr.
·      Gargamel’s cat’s name is Azreal.
·      The original mascot of Alphabets cereal was a post many named, Loveable Truly.
·      The giant record who played the spoons in Size Small was named, Friend Record.
·      Nickelback got their name because band member, Mike Kroeger worked at Starbucks, where because of the pricing structure, he would often ask customers if they would like their “nickel back.” Note…as a Canadian, and someone who has a semi-decent taste in music, I am saddened at referencing this terrible, terrible band. I apologize

And, in an attempt to make up for my Nickelback reference, I will leave you with one of my favourite clips of Friend Record! Enjoy!

National Pound Cake Day

It’s National Pound Cake Day! A day to celebrate a cake with a misleading name, because I’m pretty sure you can gain more than a pound eating that stuff!

Pound cake is a “type of cake traditionally made with a pound of each of four ingredients: flour, butter, eggs, and sugar.” These cakes can come in different sizes, but is still considered to be a “pound cake” as long as the ratio of 1:1:1:1 is still in play. They are typically coated in sugar, glazing, or icing. Pound cakes can vary around the world, even though they basically are the same – a cultural flair if you will! The American version, is the traditional one, the British use caster sugar instead of white sugar, Columbians soak the pound cake in wine mixed with either cream or sugar, the French add chocolate or lemon to the mix, Germany bases their ration on the amount of egg in the recipe, and Mexicans had a little walnut or raisin action! So there you have it! No matter what culture you are apart of may you enjoy some pound cake today! Perhaps even branch out and try one of the variations!

National National Anthem Day/National If Pets Had Thumbs Day

Happy National National Anthem Day! Today is a day about celebrating the musical number that represents the country you are from. We are the “true north, strong and free,” and honestly, after the day of random acts I participated in, I couldn’t be much prouder to be Canadian, eh?! National Anthems are the powerhouse ballad that generates pride and excitement, even though most of us didn’t necessarily appreciate it at 8 am every day before school began. Here’s a little video about my National Anthem.

Now its time to blow your minds! What if pets had thumbs? Ever consider that? Well, being as its also National If Pets Had Thumbs Day, you are obliged to spend a moment or two to think about what that might mean. Personally, it freaks me out. Although, on the other hand, it would be awfully nice if Mittens or Sparky could let themselves out at 3 am for a pee!

National Employee Appreciation Day

Happy National Employee Appreciation Day! Today is a day to thank anyone you employee or (hopefully) have your employer thank YOU for all of the work they/you do! This is the perfect day for such a Holiday, as today happens to also be “Operation Pay It Forward,” a project a few classmates and I are executing upon the town our school is located in! Stay tuned for updates, but for now, here’s a quick promo we did!

In relation to National Employee Appreciation Day, I think its important to make sure each member of the team is told the value that the bring, big or small. This could be something as simple as a high five, or a compliment, to something a bit bigger such as buying them lunch, or giving them some sort of appreciation gift. For me, the little things go the longest. Even if you don’t have employees, or teammates to appreciate, if you’re in a store or having a night out, make sure to leave a positive comment or compliment to any employee you encounter – no matter their position! So get out there and make a co-worker feel appreciated!

National Self Injury Awareness Day

Happy National Self Injury Awareness Day folks! The irony in today’s festivities is that I have recently self injured myself by jumping off of a picnic table for a promotional video for a school project taking place this weekend.

The purpose of today’s Holiday is to inform and prevent the masses from injuring themselves. This can be in your everyday life, at work, at the gym, etc. So my friends, I wish you luck on surviving today without causing yourself any injuries. Avoid paper products, sharp objects, and stairs. Good luck!

Here are some facts about the suffering of British people…terrifying and interesting all the same, although I’m not sure how accurate it is.
