Today
is sure a dandy – it’s National Drive Your Studebaker Day!
The Studebaker Corporation was “was a United States
wagon and automobile manufacturer based in South Bend, Indiana,” which was
founded in 1852. It was later incorporated in 1868, where its name was changed
to the Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company. The company “entered the
automotive business in 1902 with electric vehicles and in 1904 with gasoline
vehicles.” These vehicles became quite popular throughout the early 1900s and
especially during the pre-war era. Upon the conclusion of the war, the company
began seeing financial troubles, after facing greater competition from Ford and
General Motors. During the 1960s plants began closing, until the final cars
were produced towards the end of that decade.
