National Nachos Day

            It’s National Nachos Day today! 

          

            Nachos are “a popular food based on nixtamalized corn, of Mexican origin that can be either made quickly to serve as a snack or prepared with more ingredients to make a full meal.”  It is uncertain where nachos originated from, however, it is believed to have been Piedras Negras, in Coahuila, Mexico. Nachos are thought to have swept the United States throughout the 1950s. There are may varieties, of nachos such as with cheese and salsa, or other toppings like guacamole, ground meat, veggies (onions, peppers, olives, and tomatoes for example), and even refried beans! There is, believe it or not, a cheese designed specifically for nachos called – you guessed it – “Nacho Cheese.” That’s the unhealthy looking liquidy cheese that is served in many cafeterias or sports events. The thing is, it always looks nasty, and you know you will regret consuming it, yet you buy them. Why do we do that?

National Job Action Day

Today is National Job Action Day! The purpose of today is to take action and focus on finding your dream job. So today, take a moment, maybe even two. What is your perfect job? What haven’t you achieved it? How are you going to realize it? You see, according to what today is supposed to be celebrating, we are all capable of achieving greatness, and that means you can be a rock star, or a dentist, or a teach. There are so many job career options nowadays (thanks feminists…). So where do you dream of working when you dozing off at your less than perfect job?

National Use Your Common Sense Day

Happy National Use Your Common Sense Day! 

This is one that is strongly needed in today’s society, being as there is a significant lack in it these days! The Oxford English Dictionary defines common sense as “The endowment of natural intelligence possessed by rational beings; ordinary, normal or average understanding; the plain wisdom which is everyone's inheritance,” while a more simplified definition could be “the ability to think and behave in a reasonable way and to make good decisions.” Regardless of which you choose, I’m sure you can see now why I believe common sense is not so slowly dying! 

Now, I’m not saying we can’t all have moments, but some people are just so clueless to this basic state of being, that I have to wonder… how do they function on their own?! People who just dart out into the street without taking into account that the car cannot stop instantaneously, or who put a knife into the toaster while it’s plugged in and on. While these are only two examples of lack of common sense, they are examples none-the-less. What ones make you cringe? Tell us by voting on the Daily Poll! National Sandwich Day

Today is National Sandwich Day! 

A sandwich is “a food item commonly consisting of two or more slices of bread, with one or more fillings between them.” The earliest sandwich dates back to just prior to what we now refer to as the Common Era. A Jewish sage by the name of Hillel the Elder was known for making a sandwich of sorts during Passover, using flatbread, lamb, and herbs. In Europe, during the Middle Ages, a variation of the sandwich, known as a trencher, was often served to dogs at wealthy dinner tables. From there, sandwiches evolved into a source of nourishment when drinking. It wasn’t until the early 1900s that sandwiches became a staple food. Once they caught on in the United States, they were promoted heavily as an excellent option for dinner, which is thought to have derived from the amount of bread found in the American diet. Today, there are many varieties of sandwiches, and make an adequate lunch option if you aren’t at home. Kids often find these in their school lunches and consist of a variety of fillings.

National Deviled Egg Day

Happy National Deviled Egg Day! Deviled eggs are “hard-boiled eggs, shelled, cut in half and filled with the hard-boiled egg's yolk mixed with other ingredients such as mayonnaise and mustard, but many other variants exist internationally.” They are usually served as a cold appetizer, and date back as far as ancient Rome! 

In my opinion, deviled eggs are one of those guilty-pleasures at any dinner party or potluck! People seem to turn their nose up at them, and then when they think no one is watching them, they sneak one. Because, I don’t know if you’ve noticed this or not, but you never actually see anyone eating them, and then when YOU go to grab one, they’re all gone! Anyway, if you’re lucky enough to snag yourself one today, make sure you do it very noticeably!

National Men Make Dinner Day

It’s a new month, and it’s sure something to celebrate! Today marks National Men Make Dinner Day! Now, I’m not saying that this is a big deal, but I’m also not saying that it’s not. In fact, having a man make dinner is almost more of a miracle than that of Christmas! Okay, so, it’s not that exciting, but honestly, its quite rare that a man would make a meal. So, to my male followers, beat the odds and make yer lady a nice dinner today. Single? What a perfect way to snag a date! Just promise a potential mate a home cooked meal, and you may find yourself a new lady friend! But seriously, guys…make a meal from a woman in your life who you appreciate! It doesn’t have to be a significant other. It could be your Mom, sister, friend, aunt, niece, you get the point…
