Happy National Peanut Butter Day!
…unless of course you happen to be allergic to it…
Peanut butter is mashed up
peanuts that make a spreadable delight. Since peanuts are native to the
American tropics, it would make sense that PB is an American product. Evidence
has indicated that the Aztec’s made a PB like substance hundreds of years ago. However,
what we know as Peanut Butter today is said to be a Canadian invention. Yes,
that’s right, we’ve got hockey AND PB! Marcellus Gilmore Edson of Montreal,
Quebec patented his “creation” in 1884. PB is a good source of protein and (my
fave) dietary fibre, along with many other nutrients. In Canada, as of 2008,
the PB Industry had revenues
of $592 500.
Today, it comes in many formats
(crunchy, smooth, natural, chemical filled…) and flavors. My new favorite is
one mixed with chilies! Yum yum spicy goodness! Peanut butter can now also be
found in non-peanut varieties, for those who have allergies. That being said, one
of my all time favorite Peanut Butters is none other than Sharon, Lois and Bram’s,
which is healthy for EVERYONE!
