Happy National Rubber Ducky Day!
Rubber Ducks were first
manufactured in the 19th Century. Today these yellow-rubber bath
toys are still enjoyed by many little peanuts around the world, and can be
found in many shapes sizes and designs. As of 2011, a woman in the US named,
Charlotte Lee holds the World Record for “Largest
Collection of Rubber Ducks,” owning a total of 5631 rubber ducks!
Rubber Duckies, as they are some
times affectionately known, are the contenders in many charity races worldwide,
such as Halifax, Nova Scotia’s own, Duck
Derby. They have also been the subject of a 2011 book by author Donovan
Hohn, entitled “Moby-Duck: The True Story of 28,800 Bath Toys Lost at Sea and of the
Beachcombers, Oceanographers, Environmentalists, and Fools, Including the
Author, Who Went in Search of Them,” based on the
true story of a 3 forty foot containers that were lost during a storm in the
Pacific Ocean in 1992, while in transit from China.
And, you can’t celebrate a day
dedicated to Rubber Ducks without the sweet serenade of a delightful, fuzzy
friend, Ernie.
