Today is International
Midwives’ Day.
Midwives
work within the “health care profession in which providers offer care to childbearing
women during pregnancy, labour and birth, and during the postpartum period.”
They are not all women, although the majority of midwives are in fact, women.
The practice of being a midwife is called, Midwifery.
Midwifery dates back to the Old Testament, but
was recognized as an occupation for women in Ancient Egypt (1900-1500 BCE). They
were essentially during the birthing process, but today their craft has taken
some heat! This is due to the medical advances and technology that are currently
available. The argument is that Midwives are no longer adequate for such
services, but some beg to differ. Despite this, Midwifery is present around the
world. Their traditional history may no longer apply to the majority, but this practice
is still symbolic in many cultures today!
