Happy National Bubble Gum Day! Today
is a day to celebrate this chewy, sugary snack, while perhaps reliving a few
childhood memories.
Did you know that bubble gum is
the result of an accountant’s work? Its true! Walter E. Dimer began
experimenting with chewing gum in 1928, while working as an accountant for the
Fleer Chewing Gum Company. It was Dimer’s recipe that we now lovingly know
today as “Double Bubble.” The Double Bubble brand of bubble gum owned the
market until after World War II when Bazooka brand bubble gum entered into the
market.
Fun Bubble Gum Fact: All bubble
gum was originally the color pink, because it was the only color dye available
at that time! Who knew?!
The Guinness World Record for
“Largest Bubble Gum Bubble” belongs to, you guessed it, an American in Fresno,
California. This master bubble-blower earned her title in 1996, by producing a 23-inch
bubble. And because two bubble gum records is better than one, another
American, was crowned with the title of “Largest
Hands-Free Bubble Gum Bubble” in 2004. This bubble was only a measly 20
inches! Pa-th-etic!
Just be careful throughout the
day that you don’t end up like a certain someone, from a certain incredible 1971 film that was
butchered by Tim Burton and his unsurprising cast consisting of Johnny Depp and
Helena Bonham Carter…
