Buttons are “a small fastener,
most commonly made of plastic, but also frequently of seashell, which secures
two pieces of fabric together.” The earliest found buttons we discovered sometime
around 2800-2600 BCE amongst the Indus Valley Civilization, where they were use
more of a seal than a fastener of fabric. These initially used buttons were
also discovered in China between 2000-15000 BCE and in Ancient Rome. As far as
functioning buttons go (or buttons as we know of them today), the first known finding
was in 9th century Hungary. In the 1400s buttons accompanied by buttonholes
were found in Germany.
Today they can be found in various shapes, sizes and
colours – and they’re pretty neat! If you ever make your way into a fancy craft
store, you can sometimes get lost looking at the wide variety they come in. So,
today while you button up your shirt, purse, or cardigan, take a moment to
appreciate their uniqueness.
