National Pecan Day

Happy National Pecan Day, everyone!

Pecans are “a species of hickory, native to south-central North America.” The name “pecan” derives from the Algonquian’s, to mean “a nut requiring a stone to crack.” Pecans are actually more of a fruit than they are a nut. They are one of the more "recently" domesticated crops we consume, having only begun commercial production in the 1880s! The United States currently produces the majority of the world’s pecan supply. Pecan trees are able to live for up to 300 years!

Nutritionally, pecans contain a good source of protein, along with unsaturated fats. They also contain omega-6 fatty acids. They have the ability to reduce a woman’s chance of having gallstones, and can reduce cholesterol.

So there you have it, pecans are tasty AND good for your overall health (when consumed in moderation!). Click here to vote on today’s poll!
