International Left-Handers Day

To my left-handed followers, today is your day – it’s International Left-Handers Day!
According to my good friends at Winkipatedia (that one’s for you, Muj!), handednesscan be defined as the hand that performs faster or more precisely on tasks or the hand that one prefers to use, regardless of performance.” There are also apparently 4 types of handedness: left-handedness, right-handedness, mixed-handedness, and ambidexterity. But since today is all about my left-handed friends, we’re going to focus strictly on that type, and that type only! Did you know that it is estimated that 10% of the population are lefties? Its also found slightly more in males than females, with 12% of men and 10% of women on a global scale!

Fun Left-Handed Fact: Did you know there is a higher chance of a child being a left-hander if born a twin?

International Left-Handers Day began in 1992, when the Left Handers Club decided a day was required to raise awareness for the disadvantages to being a lefty! Things you wouldn’t even think of as being handedness-specific have been creating inequalities for left-handers around the world! Scissors, keyboards, sinks and various tools are all items that have been knowingly created with right-handed people in mind.

Fun Left-Hander Advantage Fact: Did you know that left handers are able to adjust better to seeing underwater, and tend to do better in sports such as swimming, soccer, baseball and tennis?

So all you righties – make sure you give a big left-handed high-five to all of your left-handed friends today, and make sure they feel important! Maybe try a little “in their shoes” challenge, and use only left handed things when available! Could be fun…kind of like the daily poll…which you should vote on…by clicking here!
