National Women’s Equality Day

Today marks National Women’s Equality Day! …AND National Dog Day. Haha Oh the irony…

This day was created by in 1971 by United States President, Richard Nixon, “to commemorate the granting of the vote to women throughout the country on an equal basis with men.” The vote was granted to women on this day in 1920. Its funny though how this is something to celebrate, and yet we haven’t really moved forward at all, have we? I remember a high school teacher of mine who used to rant about the saying “we’ve come a long way, baby” because in fact, we really haven’t…we’ve actually only created a bunch of gadgets to distract us from the fact that we aren’t progressing at all. We’re celebrating women being given the right to vote, and yet many women don’t even have basic human rights. Many women don’t have the right to make decisions for their own bodies – their own person. And, while I realize this rant has nothing to do with the fact that woman in “the free world” are able to cast a decision on who they’d like to elect, I’m not sure how much of a celebration it truly is until all women in all areas of the world have access to these lacking basic human rights! I am not a feminist by any means, but as a fellow human being, I think it’s sad that we still see women as something different from a man, in the same way that I can’t conceive how we treat those who like the same sex far differently than those who like the opposite sex, never mind anyone else who may vary outside of those two “accepted” possibilities.

Since we’re on the topic of voting, why not participate in the daily poll?! Click here to do so!
