International Day for the Abolition of Slavery

Happy International Day for the Abolition of Slavery! Say that ten times fast… The Slavery Abolition Act 1833 is an “Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom abolishing slavery throughout the British Empire.” Now there are other anti-slavery acts, such as the Emancipation Proclamation, which was signed thirty years later. The purpose of these Acts, as I’m sure you can guess, was to stop the practice of buying and trading humans for the purpose of slave work. This is noted for being a huge shift in the way “we” thought of slaves as being actual people, rather than workhorses, and I think we all agree, that that’s a good thing. Unfortunately, there still exists a degree of slavery in various parts of the world, although it is not to the level it once was. How sad that this day and age, “we” are still looking at our fellow species as something “we” can own.

My apologies for the heavier hitter again today. Tomorrow begins the slight transition into happier times… While you’re waiting why not vote on the Daily Poll? You can click here to do so!
