National Haiku Day

Well, if it isn’t National Haiku Day! Yes, my friends, we’ve hand National Limerick Day, but this day is different! A Haiku is “is a very short form of Japanese poetry typically characterised by three qualities:”
1. A form of punctuation to indicate two separate images subtly.
2. Consist of 17 syllables, in three phrases of 5, 7, and 5.
3. A seasonal reference
In traditional Japanese Haiku, they are printed in one single line, whereas in the English version of the poem style, it is broken up into 3 lines of 5, 7, and 5. Since it is the Holiday season, please enjoy a sampling of some Christmas-themed Haiku from Vaillancourt Folk Art:
  • Warm winter sun / Not a day at the beach / For snowmen at all
  • Stuck in the chimney / Santa started to panic! / He’s Claus-trophobic!
  • Jingle, jingle bells / Cookie and milk at each stop. / Watch the belly swell!
  • Christmas lights are bright / some even sync with music / others are steady.
  • Freshly fallen snow / Blanket the hills and valley / Look for reindeer tracks
  • Ice hangs in the trees. / Skaters glide gleeful on lake. / Father Frost has come!
And my personal favourite:
  • Christmas can be fun. / For Santa, this can wreck it. / Reindeer with the runs!
