National Brownie Day

Today makes National Brownie Day! This also makes two delicious days in a row!

A brownie is “a flat, baked square or bar developed in the United States at the end of the 19th century and popularized in both the U.S. and Canada during the first half of the 20th century.” The brownie is said to a cookie and cake hybrid, and most commonly comes in the chocolate variety, although there are a few different kinds out there. Brownie’s were invented as a request by a woman at a Chicago hotel wanted a “dessert for ladies attending” a fair of some sort.  Apparently the exact request was for them to be “smaller than a piece of cake, though still retaining cake-like characteristics and easily eaten from boxed lunches.”

Today they are one of the most popular potluck, afterschool snacks, and lunchbox items (in fact, recently I was at a dessert potluck and was delighted by the multiple pans of brownies in attendance!). I hope you get to eat lots of them today! But first, vote on the Daily Poll if you please!
