Carols are a “modern parlance a
festive song, generally religious but not necessarily connected with church
worship, and often with a dance-like or popular character.” At this time of
year, people generally sing carols that have a Christmas or seasonal theme to
them. And since it is this time of year, lets focus strictly on Christmas carols.
The
first known Christmas carol surfaced in Rome, sometime in the 4th
century. It wasn’t until the 13th century that these carols became
popular throughout Italy, as well as, Germany and France. Today they are mostly
found at religious-type gatherings.I
remember growing up a small group of neighbours used to gather and go from
house to house singing. I think (as a future fat kid) I was only interested in
participating because it generally resulted in folks giving us candy of some
sort! I’m not sure how often that happens nowadays, although to be fair, it
isn’t as accepted to express your beliefs, of any sort, about this time of
year! But, we’re rule breakers here at Daily Tasty Nugget! So that being said, we certainly can’t talk about
caroling without mentioning Mr. Bean. Check out this clip from Mr. Bean’s
Christmas Special!
