National Punch Day/National Student Day

Today marks another duel day. It is both National Punch Day AND National Student Day! Now please don’t get this mixed up and think its National Punch a Student Day! I said, dual, not duel after all!

I’m not quite sure what type of punch this day is supposed to be celebrating, but today I feel like being non-violent; so let’s assume they mean the beverage! For those of you unfamiliar, punch is “the term for a wide assortment of drinks, both non-alcoholic and alcoholic, generally containing fruit or fruit juice.” Apparently, punch is of Indian descent, and was introduced to the English in the 1600s. Today there are many different types and varieties to choose from! I prefer berry punch!

Now, on to National Student Day… For many of us, learning is a lifelong thing. I love learning. I love learning so much that after a 6-year break from school, I decided it was time to return and am now in my final year of my undergrad, with plans to continue all the way to a PhD! Students play an essential role in making the world a better place. Regardless of age, the knowledge obtained when you’re a student can be put to good use. In fact, we’re starting to see a surge of bright, young students coming up with innovative and creative ways to make the planet a better place to live! Just the other day, I was reading something about a 19-year-old student who designed a plan to clean up the ocean! There’s also many philanthropic ideas that are born out of students ability to look at the world differently, such as the co-founder of Free the Children, Craig Kielburger! This is truly inspiring. Yes, it costs a lot to go to school. But, let’s face it education is important in obtaining employment, building relationships, and just being able to achieve day to day things. We are lucky, those of us fortunate to have access to free education, and even more so if we can afford to do studies at the college or university level! Many do not have this luxury. Remember, education is a privilege, not a right! I know many will argue against that, but truly, it is.
