National Rocket Day

It’s National Rocket Day! This is an excellent day today, as I am taking off in a plane. I will now be imagining taking off in a rocket instead of being in a plane! But I digress…

So, rockets are pretty cool! A rocket is “a missile, spacecraft, aircraft or other vehicle that obtains thrust from a rocket engine.” The use of rockets for military and recreational use date as far back as 13th century China. However, after many scientific and industrial advances throughout the 20th century, these structures went from being fun back yard experiments to significant opportunities for space exploration, which if you reference National Space Day, is not something I enjoy thinking about. There are several types of rockets, but the chemical rocket is probably the most popular. It’s also quite dangerous!

Rockets are also one of the best candies EVER! Mind you, as a small child, I used to pretend they were drugs, which is worrisome, yet surprisingly was not indicative to a future of drug-dependence. Apparently I only like my drugs to be in dissolvable candy form! Interestingly, these delicious pills of sugary joy are only called Rockets in Canada. In the US they are called Smarties (still awesome, but not as awesome as Canadian Smarties…even though they are a Nestlé product!), and in England they are called Fizzers! Who knew!
Make sure you fill out today’s daily poll and help to solve the debate over which is better. You can weigh in by clicking here. And now, I leave you with everyone’s favourite “rocket” song:
